Western Staffordshire Bull Terrier Society

What's Inside?

History Of The WSBTS

Thirty-five people met behind a tent at the Championship show in Sofia Gardens and asked Alan Mitchell to write to the Kennel Club to request permission to register a Staffordshire Bull Terrier society to operate in Wales & the West country. The names submitted were the Western & Welsh or the Welsh & Western. In their wisdom the KC registered the name we have now on two grounds. The area covered is in the west of Great Britain & a previous club had carried the preferred name.

Doris Hughes Williams was the first President and Major Frank Rowley the first Hon Secretary. The Society flourished under Frank's energetic leadership & five years later won the right to hold a breed championship show, a privilege enjoyed to this day.

In time it became obvious that such was the interest in the Welsh half of the societies area that another breed club would be an advantage to work in concert with the Western. Hence the presence of two breed clubs in Wales. The second also won the right to award CC's in the fullness of time. Well Done.

The Championship show is held in Yate which is an excellent venue. The efficiency & friendly atmosphere earned the praise of the KC field officer who assesses the provision made by all who run shows.

The Open shows are held at Willand a village setting just off the M5 north of Exeter. The other is at Usk as close to the bridge as possible, leaving the valleys & major conurbations to be served by the S.B.T.C. of S.Wales.

The Western has always prided itself on its friendly atmosphere, ethical standards & the loyalty it inspires. The membership is still weighted towards the Welsh side of the Severn Bridge, although it is manly a statistical division as all are Western members and not divided by race, colour or creed.

The loyalty it inspires is typified in Bryn Cadogan who has taken on the responsibilities in management and judging at the top level in dogs, yet attends the A.G.M's & rolls his sleeves up to work at our Championship Show.
He inspired much innovation:-
The Western held breed seminars for aspiring judges before the K.C. made them mandatory. The society produced a video "An introduction to the S.B.T" and wherever you go in the world to judge Stafford's the video is there & valued. The society started the equivalent of the Ormandy jug for English Bull Terriers by providing a competition for dogs winning CC's in the year in question, winners getting "The Hoplite Helmet" the winners in future years to keep a half marked solid silver Stafford valued at £300, The trophy is entrusted to the S.B.T club.

Stafford obedience has been a feature of the societies activities inspired by Marney Wells which where dogs are concerned is a valuable activity in today's climate.

Many members visit hospitals & residential homes with their Staffords and do valuable work.

With demographic & geographic difficulties to overcome, which clubs based on large centres of population would never believe the Western attracts a large and loyal membership mainly due to it's care to be courteous, helpful & efficient in it's relations with exhibitors. It is a forward thinking, innovative society with a young and vigorous committee of officers.

The badge of the Society has changed several times. The first had the Welsh Dragon and Drakes Drum on the face, but it was felt that having stated our remit on the first & now being established it should change to have a Staffords head on it. The one accepted as the final expression of our purpose was designed by Marian Fletcher and is a very attractive emblem.
